Filament mass, length & cost
Convert a measured filament diameter and density into a useful material budget.
Your measurements
—
Illustrative starting values. Replace them with your measurements. A calculation is not a physical print test or a quality guarantee.
How to use it
Measure diameter at several locations and orientations; enter a representative value. Enter the manufacturer’s density or your own measured value, then a mass or length. Changing the unit converts the same physical quantity, not the label alone.
The arithmetic
mass = π × diameter² / 4 × length × density
With diameter in mm, length in m and density in g/cm³, the unit conversion cancels: 100 m × π × 1.75² / 4 × 1.24 ≈ 298.26 g. At 25 USD/kg, this is about 7.46 USD.
Know the limits
Assumes solid circular filament of consistent diameter and density. Filled, foamed, oval or wet filament may differ. Cost covers material only: no energy, time, tax or delivery. Currency labels do not convert exchange rates. Use your slicer for infill, supports and toolpath estimates.
Inputs must be finite and non-negative; measured dimensions, density and calibration references must be positive. Out-of-range inputs clear the result rather than leaving a stale answer.
